Terriers: The Yorkie Terrier

Description

Otherwise known by its standard name “Yorkshire terrier”, the Yorkie terrier is one of the smallest and favorite terriers among dog owners around. It has long hair instead of fur and is well known for its blue, black, and tan coat. Even for its small size, the standard Yorkshire has an athletic build that makes it suitable for an active lifestyle. It should be able to hold itself in a confident manner, so it should be given its daily exercise to keep it maintained.

In terms of its appearance, the Yorkie terrier has a long-haired coat with no undercoat, which means they do not shed unlike other short-haired breeds. Their coat grows continuously like human hair and falls out similar to human hair as well. This indicates their need of constant grooming and care for their coat.

Temperament

Though it is one of the smallest terriers, the Yorkie terrier still inherits the personality from its ancestry, making it a dog of intelligence, independence, and courage. They are also keen in knowing where it fits in the household or the family and their natural behavior makes them perfect as house dogs. The Yorkie is naturally energetic, brave, loyal, and has an average that is above average. Its courageousness can be seen when encountering strangers and other dogs, being suspicious, protective, even aggressive when around. The Yorkie has to be trained because when left alone, they can bark and yap too much at anything and anyone, they become jealous and can snap at anything that surprises them.
