They are known to be loving, alert, excellent hunter and watch dog, intelligent, has a long life span and courageous. Though, not all Terrier Puppies have these characteristics some can be stubborn and some can be quite.

- Working or hunting terrier: they are originally trained to track and locate quarry.
- Toy terrier: though they are small and cute they are not “lap dogs.” They still have the characteristics of a true terrier. The Yorkshire terrier and the English toy terrier are under this category.
- Bull-type terriers: they are a mix breed of bull dogs and terriers. Though they are terrier breeds they are treated as a separate breed for they hold the qualities if a bull dog and a terrier. Owners of this kind of terrier have trained them to be a house dog and show dogs.
According to the genetic analysis conducted, most of terrier puppies are akin to hunting. They were originally used to hunt vermin, as a watch/catch dog and even a guard dog. Today, they are used as a companion, show dog and for some a fight dog.
