Rat Terriers got its name from the occupation of their ancestors for the first Rat Terriers became known in the field of rat pit gambling. Rat Terrier Puppies are of American origin and is currently popular as both farm dogs and house pets.

Rat Terriers are often mistaken for a Jack Russell Terrier but has a totally different appearance and character. For one thing, Rat Terrier Puppies grow to have a refined head and coat that is constantly short and single unlike that of Jack Russell Terriers that are wire coated. Also, Rat Terriers are calmer and more sensitive. The Rat Terriers are bred to be socially sensitive, making them a great companion for individuals and families. They are also very easy to train. However, to achieve this, extensive socialization should be done. Rat Terrier Puppies should be exposed to different animals, all sorts of people and brought to different places. This is to assure, that the young Rat Terrier will grow able to deal with his environment.

The innate Terrier personality is still obvious with the Rat Terriers with their habit of lounging on sofas as often as running around their masters’ backyard. And being an intelligent breed of dog, Rat Terriers require constant exercise both physical and mental to continue functioning as a terrific companion.

Rat Terriers are more genetically diverse than most dog breeds and because of this; they do not have genetic disorders and are generally healthier than other dogs. Allergies are the only major problem of Rat Terriers that is why owners should be careful in exposing them to dog perfume or and unsafe food.
