Terriers: The Cesky Terrier

History

Cesky terriers are one of the most famous terrier types in the world. They have a short history as well, dating back to the times of the 1900’s. A Mr. Frantisek Horak, who is known as the developer of the Cesky Terrier, communicated and corresponded with other American Cesky terrier breeders until his death on January 6, 1996. During the course of this life Horak learned how to breed dogs and horses and worked many years at the Academy of Science in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He was very well known for breeding two types of dogs: the Cesky terrier and the Czech Piebald dog. Ever since then his hard work turned the Cesky terrier into one of the most successful breeds in the Czech republic and have been distributed worldwide even until today.

Description

The Cesky’s appearance has two colors: gray and light brown. The most common ones are the grays with the light brown Cesky terriers being the rare type. When this type of terrier has offspring, the puppies are usually born black and then fade to the color gray as they grow older. In terms of size, standard Cesky terriers are 13-20 lbs and have an average height of 10-12”.

Temperament

Unlike other terriers who are usually feisty and sociable with its owners, the Cesky is less aggressive, reserved, and yet dedicated to its owners. They are usually better in interacting with other dog breeds, making it a great house pet to bring home. They do well with people of all ages, especially with children.
