Terriers: The Airedale Terrier

The Airedale terrier is a type of terrier that originates in Airedale, which is particular area in Yorkshire, England. Known as the king of the Terriers, they are known to be one of the largest breeds of terriers around. They are also known as the Waterside terriers since they were originally trained and bred to hunt otters found around the valleys of the Aire river which runs through Airedale. The Airedale terrier is also known as a potential police dog in England.

Description

This terrier breed is known to be the largest, weighing an average of 20-33 kg with a height of 58-61 cm. This is the average dimensions of a male Airedale terrier; females are usually smaller. The Airedale has a “broken” black and tan coat of medium length and a soft undercoat as well. The coat is usually hard and dense and covers both the body and legs of the dog. When inspecting an Airedale’s coat, make sure that the coat has a saddle-like appearance.

Temperament

The Airedale terrier is a very hardworking dog and is usually used as a hunting or general working dog. They exhibit at times herding characteristics and have the tendency of chasing small animals. They have to be trained as much as possible in herding cattle or else they will be inclined to annoy and agitate them. The Airedales are very intelligent, independent, stoic, and can be stubborn at times as well. Though it is rewarding to have trained strong Airedales, the process of housebreaking and training them can be quite the challenge.
